#WeArePoWEr is the theme of this year’s Northern Power Women Awards. But how do the awards help to redefine some of the negative connotations around the idea of power?

Over the last two years, the definition of power has been brought into sharp focus across the world. We’ve seen power used to manipulate, to commit atrocities, and to cause suffering. We’ve been horrified by examples of gender, racial and political violence, as the path to equality has been impacted, and at times, thrown off-course altogether. Despite all of this, we’ve also seen some of the most amazing examples of the PoWEr of community, of people coming together to help others overcome these obstacles.

People using their PoWEr for good.

“Each of us has a choice. When it comes to using your influence or status, you can either do so for self gain or promotion, or for the benefit of others. The Northern Power Women Awards shines a much deserved spotlight on those who make the choice to use their PoWEr to leave the door open behind them for others to follow” — Simone Roche MBE

The last two years have shifted our focus away from our obligations and towards our needs as individuals. Simultaneously, the need for empathetic, authentic and genuine leadership has taken the forefront. By creating an accessible hall of role models who embody this valuable approach to leadership, the legacy of the #NPWAwards will inspire the next generation of future leaders to set the standard when it comes to how we choose to interact with each other.

“For too long the definition of power has been too narrow and niche, excluding those who don’t conform to that niche parameter from feeling powerful and valued. The Northern Power Women Awards shatter that barrier of exclusivity and allow everyone to say “I am PoWEr”’ — Simone Roche MBE
